Fall Hair Trends From The Runways

By Jennifer Van Leigh
Fall fashion lines are in stores now, but what about the hair? Fortunately, these styles are easy to re-create at any time. Atlanta Salon and Spa sat down with Robin Boyar, co-owner of Studio 305 in Buckhead to get the tips.
The tools: Bobby pins, hair elastics, fine tooth comb, medium-barrel curling iron.
Look: Deep, Slick Parts
Where You’ve Seen It: Alexander Wang, Chloe, Pucci, Jill Sander
Starting with unwashed hair, create a part on the side of your choosing. Using a fine tooth comb, sweep the hair into place, smoothing with your other hand. Robin recommends Redken Forceful #23 Finishing Spray for a flexible hold to keep your part in place throughout the day. The look can be finished with a barrette, a low ponytail or a fashion-friendly knot (see below).
Look: Brushed Back Pompadour
Where You’ve Seen It:Carolina Herrera, Gucci, MiuMiu
For those with long hair, section out your front piece, depending on how much height you’d like, and pull the rest back to keep it out of the way. Separate your front into another two separate pieces, one behind the other. Take a medium-barrel curling to your front piece, making sure to “keep it in a curled position until the hair cools” reminds Robin. This piece is what will give you a smooth and shapely pompadour. Back-comb the rear piece until you achieve your desired height and volume. Gather the two pieces together and pull toward your crown, though “make sure not to pull too tightly” warns Robin. Secure with a bobby pin if necessary, and finish with Tri Aerogel Styling Spray for firm hold.
Alternate looks: The runways of Karl Lagerfeld and Prada featured messy, casual versions of this look, using only backcombing and bobby pins, forgoing the smooth appearance. The stylists for Oscar De La Renta aimed for a more formal bouffant style, for which sectioning and back-combing your side pieces is also step toward achieving a fuller look.
With a pompadour in front, anything goes in back! Create a faux-hawk, a high ponytail, or a French twist.
Look: Loose Natural Waves
Where You’ve Seen It: Anna Sui, Dsquared, Proenza Schouler
There’s not much to this look, simply clean and healthy hair parted any which way you’d like. For this look, focus on the health of your hair and scalp. If you’re a product junkie, Robin recommends leaving shampoo on your scalp for a minute or two, “to fully cut through all the product build-up.” Give yourself a scalp massage through shampooing and conditioning, using the pads of your fingers to stimulate the scalp and roots. For those with finer hair, use a conditioner on the lower lengths of your hair only, to avoid a weighted, stringy look.
With your refreshed scalp and clean hair, add a part and you’re ready to go. If you’d like more waves, Robin recommends applying Redken Spray Starch, and then wrap individual sections around a medium-barrel curling iron held vertically. Once the hair has cooled and the curl has set, finger-comb through the lengths of your hair to soften the effect.
Look: Buns and Knots
Where You’ve Seen It: Christian Lacroix, Giorgio Armani
Paired with a slick part as seen at Armani, or worn high at the crown, buns and knots are a great way to add accent or focus to your style. If you plan on using a part or other styled front that may affect the way your bun sits, take care of that first using the tips above.
Both buns and knots start with gathering your hair into an elastic as a base for each look. For a simple bun, take the ponytail and twist tightly, shaping the hair into a circle as it coils in on itself, pinning through pieces of your hair and securing them to the elastic. Tuck the ends into the elastic, or pin one final time, and you’re all set. You can finish with a holding spray, or let a few pieces fly as time passes. For a light but secure hold, one of Robin’s surefire tricks is crossing two pins through the base.
When making a knot, take tiny sections from the aforementioned ponytail and twist until they coil, securing each set of ends into the elastic. For a less formal effect, take the small sections and loop over and under, every which way, pinning ends to the elastic as you go.
The Look: Hyper-Pinned
Where You’ve Seen It: Christian Dior
No one does it like Dior when it comes to clothes, but now you can have the hair! By far the friendliest style for a lazy Sunday when you still want to look runway-cool, over-pinning works best with slightly dirty hair and a part of your choosing. For a stronger look, oversized pins are the way to go, although contrasting colors work just as well. The stylists for Dior used pins to create faux-bangs, bobs and finger waves, but your hair pattern is entirely up to you, so get creative!

Natural Advice from Sally B

Most of us care for our skin - we want it to look and feel good! Beauty ads set the standards, and we spend a lot of money seeking the best results. Each day, our skin comes into contact with soaps, lotions and makeup. Yet, studies have shown that chemicals in these products have adverse health effects.
Quick facts about skin:
- Skin is our largest organ and works as a protective shield. But no shield carries a guarantee. What we put on the outside effects our inside. Remember, medicine can be administered via ointments or adhesive patches (think nicotine patch).
- Skin makes Vitamin D and other hormones for the rest of the body and produces steroids and thyroid hormone for its own use.
- Skin also make neutransmitters for our brains.
How to Read Lables
These days, we have better product choices. But how do you know what’s best, when labels are so hard to read? Here are a few do’s and don’ts:
- Look for organic ingredients. These include herbs or other natural ingredients, grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. They are people- and planet-friendly.
-Read labels, but don’t panic when you see long chemical names. Labels must list contents using the standardized “international Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients.” For example, Vitamin E is Tocopherol and wheat germ is Tritcum Vulgare.
-Avoid these ingredients:
Propylene glycol : used in moisturizer, anti-bacterial products and deodorant, as well as in anti-freeze and pesticides. Can cause throat irritation, headache, kidney problems, necrosis (cell death) and more.
Artificial fragrances: Often derived from petroleum and can cause cancer, birth defects and allergies. Instead, look for plant-derived essential oils.
Bismuth oxychloride: A heavy metal, often found in mineral makeup and called “natural”. It can congest pores and cause itching and rosacea flare-ups.
Sodium laureth (or lauryl) sulfate (SLES, SLS, or surfactants): Agents that make body wash and shampoo foam up. They irritate skin and could cause PMS and menopause symptoms, male infertility and certain cancers.
Parabens: (e.g. methyl-, propyl- or butyl-paraben) Widely used chemical preservatives that can mimic estrogen and increase the risk of cancer.

Tips for transitioning your look from summer to fall: Exfoliate! You can’t hide dry, flakey patches of skin, so you must remove them. The same goes for lips. Lipstick is making a BIG comeback, so keep your kisser smooth and supple by mixing a dab of sugar into your favorite lip balm to create your own lip scrub. Moisturizing your lips at bed time also does wonders. Before applying lipstick, always moisturize lips then blot away excess with a tissue. Want perfectly painted eyes? Then remember to layer color instead applying all at once. Gradually building color yields smooth, even results. And tools are everything. Always use good quality brushes! Fall welcomes richer fabric textures and colors, so it’s the perfect season to experiment with deeper lip colors. This season, deep wines, dusty plums and rusty reds lipsticks–whether worn sheer or opaque, glossy or matte–will update your look. If eyes are your focus, shimmering olives, plums, coppers and greys look fabulous on every skin and eye color. Have fun. Play!

Beauty Through Wellness
By Angela Braden
Beauty and wellness are intricately intertwined. Glowing skin, lustrous hair, a lean body and white teeth make up a multi-billion dollar beauty industry. But aside from the cosmetic approach to beauty, often-overlooked health-promoting treatments can work wonders, from the inside out. Here are a few key treatments (available at a wellness center near you) to work into your beauty routine, along with that glorious bronzer and designer lip gloss:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Beauty benefits: Can increase mental clarity, improve energy, support rejuvenation, detoxify, clear and renew complexion, and promote normal sleeping patterns.
There is nothing more effective to calm and renew a tired mind, body, and spirit than deep breathing fresh air. A Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber (HBOT) surrounds your entire body in pure oxygen, at three times the normal atmospheric pressure. Pure oxygen is pumped into the chamber while an increase in atmospheric pressure pushes the oxygen molecules deep into layers of skin and tissues that normally don’t get a hefty dose of this life-enhancing element. You might just fall asleep inside the comfortable chamber during a typical thirty-minute session.
For more than one hundred years, doctors have been prescribing HBOT sessions to patients with severe injuries and conditions (trauma, wound healing, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and more), but this treatment is a stellar anti-aging investment as well. The body usually replaces the skin approximately every 28 days, but toxins, lack of sleep, and nutritional deficiencies can slow that process, over time resulting in a dull complexion, fine lines and uneven pigmentation. Inside the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, the power of pure oxygen works at the deepest level to eliminate the negative factors that can keep us from looking, well, healthy.
Ionic Foot Cleanse
Beauty benefits: Can clear skin and increase energy.
Preventing illness and disease should be beauty objective number one! And detoxification is one of the best preventative measures we can take to this aim. Ionic spa treatments are making their way from wellness centers into a few upscale spas around Atlanta, like Blue Medspa, (www.bluemedspa.com). I actually purchased mine at Progressive Medical Center (www.progressivemedicalcenter.com), for at home use, providing a much lower cost-per-treatment.
Not that committed? Try a discounted session at the upcoming Passion Driven Life event (www.passiondrivenlife.com) on October 10th and 11th. During this pain free and relaxing treatment, you sit with your feet in a tub of warm salt water. A device known as an array then runs millions of negatively charged ions through your body. The ions attach to waste particles, which are positively charged, then the array pulls the toxins through the pores in the feet and into the water. The unsightly range of hues, from yellow to deep sepia, reveal the toxins that were in your body—better in the water than in you!
Thyroid Testing and Treatment
Beauty benefits: Can reverse chronic fatigue, stop hair loss, and make loosing weight easier in those who test low.
An under-active thyroid gland is extremely common, causing weight gain and making it difficult to lose weight. The thyroid gland sends chemical messages to burn fat in order to stay warm and maintain core temperature. According to Progressive Medical Center’s Bryan Ginter, N.D., there are simple nutritional programs that help immensely and almost immediately to reverse thyroid problems. Symptoms include weight gain, fatigue, depression, cold hands and feet, and dry skin. A simple blood test done at Progressive, coupled with an on-site doctor’s visit, will give you scientific results and a specific nutrient protocol, based not only on the hormone levels, but also how they are converting (being used in the body). Don’t bother with your conventional M.D. on this one; standard screening looks at 1-2 markers, while the Progressive facility measures a minimum of 14 different markers to assess complete thyroid function.
General help for the thyroid includes: herbs like black walnut, vitamin A, and the mineral, zinc. Sea vegetables are also very important and provide the thyroid-friendly nutrient, iodine—this calls for weekly sushi nights.
Infrared Sauna
Beauty benefits: Can clear skin, increase energy, aid in weight loss, and improve circulation (read: Get that Glow!).
In virtually any health club or gym across America, you can find a sauna or steam room, in which people sit and sweat it out in hopes of losing inches and toxins, but in a traditional sauna, they’re only sweating surface sweat. For a far deeper, more beneficial detoxifying effect, there is far-infrared (FIR) heat. This type of heat creates micro-vibrations in cells up to two inches below the skin’s surface to eliminate toxins and water weight that other saunas leave behind. Many of these deep-residing toxins include heavy metals, like lead, aluminum, and mercury, which wear down the body inside and out—not conducive to beauty. The intense heat also burns between 400-600 in a thirty-minute session. It doesn’t get much better than deeply detoxifying and burning that panini off, while sitting back and reading you favorite book.
Sometimes, there’s nothing like a fabulous new hair color to make you feel like new in the moment, but when it comes to beauty that will last a lifetime, you have to go a little deeper. Take care of your body on the inside and reap the gorgeous rewards.
Atlanta Salon & Spa Fall Product Round-Up
The Beauty Ship is turning towards Green-Land…
Refillable lipstick cartridges? Make-up derived from dirt? The cosmetic industry is going green and there is no turning back. In response to customer demand, companies that previously relied on harsh chemicals in their products are now turning to natural, organic, and food-based ingredients. In addition, sustainable packaging solutions, fair-trade business relationships and alternative power supplies for factories (Aveda claims itself to be the first beauty company manufacturing with 100% windpower.*) are becoming standard operating procedure.
Buzzwords from the past such as parabens, hydroquinine, formaldehyde and lead (as an ingredient in lipstick) have sent consumers scrambling to read the small “ingredients” labels in search of safer products. Large companies such as DuPont (Burts Bees) ,L’Oreal (the Body Shop) and Colgate-Palmolive (Tom’s of Maine) have acquired natural and/or organic competitors – not to change the operations but as an acknowledged growing and long-term profit center.
Not only are large companies profiting from the new eco-sensibility. Consumers can look in their own hometowns for cottage-industry manufacturers of natural soaps, shampoos, deodorants and a wide range of daily health and beauty products. In this issue Atlanta Salon and Spa highlights** a cross section of organic and naturally-minded products, from small local individuals in Atlanta that deserve our support (ie Sally B and Ecocolors) to large companies demonstrating a slower but steady turning towards green policy.
